Plan your new lawn.
Know what to order.
Measure your lawn sections, subtract paths and beds, and calculate sod in square feet, pieces and pallets. Add your supplier’s prices to estimate material, delivery and installation costs.
Your lawn estimate
Here’s what to plan for.
Your cost estimate
Excludes sales tax, site preparation, old lawn removal, equipment rental and unentered charges. Supplier minimums or different billing rules can change the final quote.
Roll/slab and pallet counts are alternative purchase options, not quantities to add together. Check sizes, available units and the final order with your supplier.
How much sod do I need?
Measure the area that will actually receive grass. Add the area of each lawn section, subtract paths, patios and planting beds within those sections, then add a cutting allowance.
Example: a 40 × 25 ft lawn measures 1,000 sq ft. Subtract a 100 sq ft patio and add a 5% allowance: 900 × 1.05 = 945 sq ft. With 10 sq ft pieces, that means 95 whole pieces. With 500 sq ft pallets, it means 2 whole pallets instead.
Check the pallet size before comparing prices
A pallet is not a fixed unit of area. Sod Solutions explains that coverage varies by supplier and product. Enter the actual square feet on the pallet, and compare prices on the same purchase basis.
How much extra sod should I allow?
Sod Solutions suggests 5–10% extra for cutting and fitting. A simple lawn may use less extra material than one with curved edges or many obstacles. This tool starts at 5%; adjust it to your project and supplier advice.
Are rolls and slabs the same size?
No. Piece sizes vary. Use the area covered by one roll or slab in the supplier-size field. If you know a piece’s dimensions in inches, multiply length by width and divide by 144 to get square feet.
Does the cost include the unused sod on a full pallet?
When you choose pricing per whole pallet, yes: the material charge uses the rounded-up number of pallets. Per-piece pricing uses whole pieces. Per-square-foot pricing uses the lawn requirement including your allowance, without rounding to pallets. Choose the method your supplier actually bills.
How is installation calculated?
The installation rate is multiplied by the net lawn area after exclusions, without adding cutting waste. If your contractor bills installation on ordered material or offers a fixed project quote, request a separate quote instead of using the per-area field.
Measurements and prices are calculated in your browser. This tool does not upload them or save a project history.
